It's a sad fact of life that there are some people who make a habit of stealing bikes that don't belong to them.
Around 150,000 bicycles are stolen across Britain every year, with bike theft proving to be a growing frustration for cyclists everywhere.
Here's what you can do to make sure it isn't your bike that they steal.
More than half of all bike thefts take place from the owner's property so ensure garages and sheds are well secured and never leave your bike unattended outside your home.
Security marking and registration of your bicycle are the best ways of ensuring it is returned to you if stolen.
Tip 2:
Park your bike safely and considerately.
Use a cycle stand or cycle shelter if possible, rather than street furniture such as lamp posts.
Tip 3:
Always lock your bike when leaving it.
Lock cycles through the frame, and secure or remove wheels.
Also remove smaller parts and accessories that can't be secured, especially lights, pumps and quick release saddles.
If this is not possible, use two securing clamps, like a D-lock, on the front and back wheels.
Otherwise you might come back to just a secured wheel and nothing else.
Tip 4:
Don't leave your bike in an isolated place, use a reasonably well-lit area for your own safety.
If you're returning to your bike after dark, then park in an area covered by CCTV if possible.
Tip 5:
Finally, keep a photograph of your bike and keep a record of all its details.
